About Me

About

The Classic City Golf Association (CCGA) had a very humble beginning. It was organized in 1984 by a by a small group of African-American men who had a mutual love for the game of golf. In those early days, there were not many African-Americans in Athens that played golf and these gentlemen wanted to introduce the sport to the youth of this community.

The founding members were:
Robert Gunter
Thomas Elder
Joe Beck
Willie Gatlin
Vernon Howard

Today the CCGA is an active member of the Interstate Golf Association (IGA), which has chapters in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. While golf is the recreational glue that bonds the group, CCGA members are more than avid golfers. They are also heavily involved in community service. Their community service focus is dedicated to helping selected non-profit organizations that provide various support services to Athens youths and needy citizens.

Goal:

The goal is to assist these important organizations by making monetary contributions to their programs. In order to raise funds to achieve this goal, the CCGA sponsors an annual amateur golf tournament in Athens. With proceeds from the annual event, the CCGA has given financial aid to several Athens non-profits, including Relay for Life -Athens, Mercy Health Center, Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, Fisher Scholarship Fund, Faith Today Ministries, and Athens Clarke County Youth Football Program at East Athens Community Center.

The CCGA is a non-profit tax exempt organization under 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue code. Membership is open to the public and its members welcome all interested parties, including non-golfers.
